Dom Bjelave
Sarajevo, BiH - Since May 2022
Located in Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Dom Bjelave Orphanage has been operational since 1900 - the only orphanage of its kind to remain open following World War II. Currently it is serving more than 70 children spanning all ages from infancy through teenage years. Children at the orphanage enter the government-funded school system in Bosnia approximately at the age of six.
Working With Dom Bjelave
Montessori Origins began work with Dom Bjelave Orphanage in early 2022 to facilitate a Montessori-based early learning program within their center. Since September 2022, children at the orphanage between the ages of two and six have been attending our Monday through Friday toddler and primary program. We provide the following at Dom Bjelave:

A full-time Montessori-trained directress and classroom assistant

On-site training for the current orphanage staff

Child-sized classroom furniture

All Montessori materials and classroom supplies

Online support tools to track each child’s progress and provide metrics for success

Extra-curricular activities (music, athletics, art)
The partnership with Montessori Origins has given us the opportunity to recognize the best in us and in the children we care for. The level of creativity and fun this new program has brought is unbelievable. Thank you to everyone who has contributed so far and onwards we go.

Montessori Origins approached Jedinstvena Generacija (JG) — a local Montessori school and NGO — to be our eyes and ears on the ground in Bosnia to get our program off the ground. JG have been an indispensable partner in bringing the Montessori Origins vision to life in the Dom Bjelave orphanage. They facilitated the hiring of local Montessori teachers, provided on-site training and helped to build the new environment for the children. We are grateful to their team in helping get Montessori Origins established.
